Dry Eye Therapy

Everyone’s eyes feel dry from time to time. But if you struggle with irritated, gritty-feeling eyes on a regular basis, you most likely suffer from dry eye disease.

Visions of Washington is equipped to diagnose your dry eye disease; identifying the source, and providing you with a treatment that addresses the problem rather than just the symptoms.

Request an appointment to speak with one of our optometrists about dry eye today.

Symptoms of Dry Eye

Symptoms of dry eye may include:

  • Burning or irritation
  • Watery eyes
  • Stringy discharge
  • Eye fatigue
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Glare or halos around lights
  • Redness
  • Itching

What’s Causing My Dry Eye Symptoms?

Dry eye disease typically stems from one of two issues; low tear volume or poor tear quality.

Tear Volume

Your eyes need tears for lubrication and protection. If your tear glands don’t make enough tears for your eyes to stay hydrated, they can’t work as effectively as they should.

Your tears contain a special oil called meibum. The meibum makes a film that floats on top of the tears and keeps them from evaporating too quickly. Sometimes the eyelids don’t produce enough meibum to make an effective film, allowing the tears to evaporate from the surface of the eye before they have a chance to properly lubricate it.

Some of Our Treatment Options

Punctal Plugs

Your eyelids come equipped with drainage ducts in both the upper and lower lids. Punctal plugs are very small devices that are inserted into the drainage ducts, allowing your tears to stay on the eye’s surface longer.

Read more about punctal plugs.

While over-the-counter eye drops (sometimes called artificial tears) can offer temporary relief from dry eye symptoms, medicated eye drops like Restasis are designed to provide a long-term solution. These drops stimulate your body’s natural tear production, increasing tear volume.

Read more about Restasis.

Lacrisert is a very small tablet that’s placed under the lower eyelid of each eye, daily. The tablet slowly dissolves throughout the day, stabilizing your natural tear film and lubricating your eyes. This medication comes with an applicator to facilitate easier insertion.
