Children’s Eye Exams

Some parents don’t think their kids need eye exams until they are old enough read. The truth is that vision is a key part of a child’s development and can have a significant impact on a child’s ability to walk, talk, and learn. Regular eye exams are important for kids of all ages.

Request an appointment for your child today.

How Often Do Kids Need Eye Exams?

The American Optometric Association recommends kids have an eye exam at 6 months of age and again at the one year mark. They also suggest at least one eye exam between the ages of 3 and 5. Once your child is school-aged, they should have their eyes examined annually.

It’s important to remember that this timeline is only a general guide for low-risk kids. Be sure to follow your doctor’s recommendations and bring your child in for eye exams per their instructions.

What to Expect From Your Child’s Eye Exam

While testing methods vary somewhat depending on your child’s age, we will evaluate their near and distance vision, eye tracking, eye teaming, and ocular health. Even if your child can’t read or even communicate verbally yet, we have a variety of engaging techniques to help us understand what your child sees and how well they see it.

Myopia Control Could Save Your Child From a Heavy Prescription

Myopia or nearsightedness is becoming a more common issue in kids. And while lots of kids only have a very minor case when they’re first diagnosed, it always gets worse as they grow up. Myopia control can help prevent your child’s nearsightedness from getting much more severe before they reach adulthood.
